DAS ANDERE SELBE (2023)

For Variable Instrumentation

'Das andere Selbe' is a composition designed for one or more performers. The development of the piece is shaped by the interplay between halting and evolving actions, through a repetitive order of actions and the introduction of temporal variations. I find the boundaries between these concepts to be extremely fluid. I am particularly fascinated by the question of how static and dynamic circumstances are perceived, and whether there could be non-subjective criteria for their perception or definition. For instance, is a sequence of sounds perceived as the same if its durations change with each repetition? The recognition of cyclical or repetitive events—whether through time, action, or a combination of both—likely varies from person to person. Emerging from these questions, the juxtaposition of consistencies and inconsistencies in the sequence of actions and their durations creates a heterophonic landscape of events in my composition. I have notated this piece as a meta-score, which does not specify traditional musical parameters (e.g., sounds, durations) but rather the events chosen by the performers according to a predetermined order. This allows the score to incorporate various elements, such as movement, electronic sounds, or language, and enables it to take on a choreographic function at the same time.
